I built this one to display 30 or more carded vehicles.
I put some of my favorite carded cars in this one. Makes a great wall display!

Thanks so much for blogging about your collection. I have a 15 y.o. son who is interested in collecting and wants to learn more about how to display and keep the cars. I’ve told him not to take them out of the pkg as it diminishes the value. Of course, I know nothing about that, I just don’t want them all over the bedroom floor and figured if he kept them in the pkg then I wouldn’t be stepping on them when I go in there! LOL Anyway, we’d love to know more about the hobby!
Hello Cynthia!
Thanks for checking out my site. I’m glad your son is interested in collecting diecast cars. It’s a lot of fun and easy to do. However, it might be a bit difficult for your son to keep his cars in the package right now. I think I started ‘buying’ my first Hot Wheels around his age. I always took the cars out of the packages back then, because I just had to see how fast they were on my Hot Wheels track. It wasn’t until I was in my early twenties that I began to leave a few cars in their packages. I had a bit more money then, and could afford to buy enough cars to satisfy my opening urge and still leave a few in their blister packs. I also wasn’t playing with the cars quite as much as I got older, but I have to admit to still racing Hot Wheels with a buddy even in my thirties! I suppose the child in me never completely goes away.
I first kept the unopened cars in shoe boxes, but eventually used plastic totes when my collection got too big for shoe boxes. Now as far as displaying my cars goes, you can see the method I prefer by looking at all of the wooden displays I built pictured on my blog site. For loose cars (out of the package), a lot of collectors like the acrylic cases that you can close to keep out dust, but I really like creating Hot Wheel racing scenes to show off my cars and don’t mind doing a bit of dusting from time to time to keep it looking sharp. As for carded cars (still packaged), I also like to use Hot Wheel theme colors. I am currently working on a larger carded display that will hold 49 cars. It’s for my Classic collection which have red cards (packages) so I’m making it all dark blue for a really cool contrasting appearance. If you’re interested, I could create a custom display for your son. Just tell me the type of cars he’d like to display (loose or carded), and I’ll send you guys some descriptions to see what you’d like.
Be sure to tell your son he’s chosen an awesome hobby and to just have fun with it!
Sincerely,
Jim
